Industry Rig Counts
M-I SWACO Worldwide Rig Count
The worldwide rig count is the sum of the average of the weekly US & Canada rig counts for the calendar month plus the rigs active in the rest of
the world. The worldwide rig count is published the second week of each month, reflecting the previous month's data. It includes rigs engaged in
drilling and related operations, which include drilling, logging, cementing, coring, well testing, fishing, waiting on weather, running casing,
and blowout preventer (BOP) testing; it does not include rigs engaged in workover operations. In January 2010, figures were restated to account
for differences in the definition of non-serviceable rigs in a number of countries including Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan.
In addition, figures for rigs in Algeria and Abu Dhabi were also restated to reflect reclassification of workover rigs in these countries.
To aid reconciliation between rig counts before and after restatement, historical data are available.
M-I SWACO US & Canada Rig Count
The US & Canada rig count is published weekly on Tuesday, reflecting the previous week’s data. A rig is included in the count if it is engaged in
drilling and related operations. Workover and completion activity are explicitly excluded.
M-I SWACO Area Rig Count
The area rig count shows the change in worldwide rig activity between the current month and the previous month, and the cumulative averages for
this year and for last year, classified by areas that correspond closely to those in which Schlumberger operates. The rig count does not indicate
the level of Schlumberger activity in any area.
Smith Bits STATS
STATS include rigs that are actively drilling wellbore and using considerable amounts of oilfield products and services. The count includes
traditional rotary design rigs, workover rigs, truck mounted rigs, and coiled-tubing rigs if they are rigging up, drilling, fishing, or rigging down.
These rigs are included in the count until they reach total depth. Rigs specifically not included are cable tool rigs and those involved in non-drilling
activities.
